Modeling radiation- and carbon-use efficiencies of maize, sorghum, and rice
نویسنده
چکیده
A previously developed model for radiation-use efficiency (RUE) for gross photosynthesis and net carbon accumulation by wheat before anthesis [Agric. Forest Meteorol. 101 (2000) 217], with some improvement, has been applied to maize, sorghum, and rice during their vegetative period under unstressed conditions. The objective of the present study is to assess the extent to which the model can provide RUE for net carbon accumulation and carbon-use efficiency (CUE; the ratio of daily net carbon accumulation and gross photosynthesis) for a range of incident irradiance and leaf area indices of maize, sorghum and rice, recognizing that (a) these crops are grown in substantially different environmental conditions than those for wheat, and (b) while rice is a C3 crop like wheat, maize and sorghum are C4 crops. The calculated RUE values for net carbon accumulation differed from observations (five for maize, two for sorghum and three for rice) by −24% to +19%, with an average (n = 10) of −4% (underestimation), while the calculated CUE values are found to be within the range of observations. The model parameters have not been calibrated or adjusted for these comparisons. Calculations suggest that there is much room to increase the RUE of sorghum over the currently available measurements, although it might not attain the potential maximum value for maize. The effects of variations in the maximum rate of leaf photosynthesis among cultivars, changes in the relationship between maximum rate of photosynthesis by leaves and its nitrogen content, and uncertainties in the input canopy parameters on RUE and CUE are assessed by sensitivity analysis. Kinetic Modeling of Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Pretreated Sorghum Bicolor and Rice Husk
In this study, the hydrolysis of pretreated sorghum stem and rice husk was investigated at various initial enzyme concentrations and substrate loadings. The slowdown in enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials with conversion has often been attributed to decreasing the activity of enzyme. A kinetic model was developed and expressed mathematically based on enzyme deactivation for enzyma...
متن کاملDNA rearrangement in orthologous orp regions of the maize, rice and sorghum genomes.
The homeologous Orp1 and Orp2 regions of maize and the orthologous regions in sorghum and rice were compared by generating sequence data for >486 kb of genomic DNA. At least three genic rearrangements differentiate the maize Orp1 and Orp2 segments, including an insertion of a single gene and two deletions that removed one gene each, while no genic rearrangements were detected in the maize Orp2 ...
متن کاملMicrocolinearity in sh2-homologous regions of the maize, rice, and sorghum genomes.
Large regions of genomic colinearity have been demonstrated among grass species by recombinational mapping, but the degree of chromosomal conservation at the sub-centimorgan level has not been extensively investigated. We cloned the rice and sorghum genes homologous to the sh2 locus of maize on bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs), and observed that a homologue of the maize a1 gene was also ...
متن کاملMaize productivity and nutrient use efficiency in Western Kenya as affected by soil type and crop management
Low soil fertility and high weed infestation are the main culprits for the declining maize production inWestern Kenya. Technology packages to address these constraints exist, but their effectiveness is likely to be influenced by variability in soil types and farm management practices in the region. Trials were conducted during the 2008/2009 cropping seasons to investigate the nutrient use e...
متن کاملStructure and evolution of the r/b chromosomal regions in rice, maize and sorghum.
The r1 and b1 genes of maize, each derived from the chromosomes of two progenitors that hybridized >4.8 million years ago (MYA), have been a rich source for studying transposition, recombination, genomic imprinting, and paramutation. To provide a phylogenetic context to the genetic studies, we sequenced orthologous regions from maize and sorghum (>600 kb) surrounding these genes and compared th...
